Why rats and mice move into Cork homes every autumn
Rodent calls across Cork roughly double from September. Cold nights, cut fields and one 6mm gap are usually all it takes.
The autumn trigger
Rats and mice live outdoors happily all summer. Once fields are cut, hedgerows thin out and night temperatures drop, they look for somewhere warm and dry with food nearby. Terraced houses in the city, bungalows near farmland and holiday homes on the west Cork coast all get hit for the same reason.
How small a gap they need
A mouse gets through a gap the width of a biro — about 6mm. A young rat needs roughly the size of a two euro coin. Typical routes into a Cork house are around waste and service pipes under the sink, gaps where an extension meets the original wall, open airbricks, lifted ridge tiles and cable entries.
Signs worth acting on
The earlier you call, the cheaper and quicker the job is.
- Droppings along skirting boards, in the hot press or under the sink
- Scratching or scurrying overhead at night, mostly just after dark
- Gnawed food packaging, pipe lagging or cabling
- A stale ammonia smell in an enclosed press or attic
- A dog or cat suddenly fixated on one corner or appliance
Treatment and proofing together
Baiting alone empties the house and refills it a month later. A proper job means inspection, a treatment plan, then physically sealing the entry points with wire wool, mortar, mesh and steel plate where needed. We return to check the bait and confirm activity has stopped before signing the job off.
What you can do this week
Move bird feeders away from the house, keep bins closed and off the wall, cut back ivy and climbers from the roofline, store pet food in sealed containers, and mesh any open airbrick. None of it is expensive and all of it helps.
